Ann Stroud Matlock

Ann Stroud Matlock, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 22, 2023 in Port St. Joe, Florida.


Ann was born on January 11, 1934 and grew up in Athens, Alabama. She was the daughter of James Oscar Stroud and Hazel Meador Stroud. Following graduation from Athens High School, Ann attended the University of Montevallo, where she graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics.


Ann married her husband, Leonard Augusta Matlock, Jr., in 1956, and in 1968, the family relocated to the Dalkeith community South of Wewahitchka.


Ann was preceded in death by her parents, James Oscar Stroud and Hazel Meador Stroud; husband, Leonard Augusta Matlock, Jr.; brother, James M. (“Jimmy”) Stroud, and her grandson, Evan Carter Matlock.


She is survived by her children, George Vaughn Matlock (Nancy) and Leonard Augusta Matlock, III (Patti); grandchildren, Chelsea Ann Matlock, Colleen Jo Matlock, and Logan Rubel Matlock; great-grandchild Montgomery James Olson; and many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.


Ann was the long-time librarian of the Wewahitchka branch library, retiring at the age of 73 in 2007 after 31 years of service. She touched many lives during those years and was able to pass the love of reading to many children and adults. She loved helping people and was a very generous, kind, and loving person. She loved her family and delighted in the time she had with her grandchildren and her new great-grandchild.


The family plans a private ceremony and interment at a later date.
