Ms. Betty Jean Dawson age 79 of Port St. Joe, Florida transitioned to life eternal on Thursday, January 16, 2025. 

Betty Jean McCray Dawson was born in Cordele, Georgia to parents, Vella Mae Dismuke and Eddie McCrae. She spent her formative years in Cordele with her mother, stepfather, Jim Paul and a large extended family that included her beloved grandmother, aunts, uncles and a multitude of cousins. Betty attended Southview and A.S. Clark School in Cordele and eventually transferred and graduated from Washington High School in Port St. Joe, Florida. Betty remained in St. Joe, a place she loved and made her forever home, but she never forgot about Cordele.

Betty married the love of her life, Charlie Dawson Jr., in her he found a good, faithful and loving wife. They were a perfect match for each other and were married for 54 years. To this union four children were born, Timothy, Sabrina, Charles Kevin, and Patrick. Betty loved being a mother, housewife and homemaker.

Over the course of her life Betty favorite things included, Charlie’s cooking, yard sales, crafts, going to the senior center, bingo, puzzle books, polishing her nails, her cup of coffee first thing in the morning, politics, everything Pioneer Woman, and hearing Herbert sing,

Betty was good-natured, positive, fun-loving, humorous, and always had a smile on her face. She had an endearing personality that embraced everyone. She never met a stranger and had a knack of easily bonding with whomever she met. Her unbreakable spirit and strong undying faith were her sustaining strength in life.

Her passing leaves a tremendous loss for the many family members and friends who love and will truly miss her.

Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Vella Mae Dismuke; her husband, Charlie Dawson Jr.; two sons, Christopher and Charles Kevin; and great granddaughter, Za’Narieh. 

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Timothy (Tanya), Sabrina (Eric Sr.,), and Patrick; sisters, Eloise Clark, Philadelphia, PA and Niclanda Jackson (Lester), York, South Carolina; aunt, Sarah Curry, Macon, GA; beloved cousins, Helen Bridge, Atlanta, GA and Beryl Patrick, Cordele, GA; daughter-in-law, Aleicer Dawson; sister-in-law, Carrie Brown-Duncan, Bowie, MD; brother-in-law, Corneilus Dawson, Panama City, FL; grandchildren, Alicia, Tyrone, Antonio, Lafayette, Ryan, Eric Jr., Douglas, Camilla, Marquez, Tatiana, Jakovia, Charles Kevin Jr, Angel, Whitney, Kjon, Daizsa; great grandchildren, Trinity, Christian, Sandros, Elijah, Zhyin, Reagan, Kensley, Kaicen, Morgan, Za’Kari, Za’Laila, Za’Kaden, Arayla; nieces Vivian Jones (Claude), Orlando, FL, Deneise Quinn Hall, Valdosta, GA, Cora Quinn, Port St. Joe, FL, Tawanna Dawson, Baton Rouge, LA; Chelenesta Dawson, Panama City, FL; nephews, Willie Dawson Jr., (Temple Hills, MD), Sandy Quinn (Beverly); Willie Quinn (Lisa), Michael (Bertha), and Christopher Quinn, Port St. Joe, Florida; a hosts of cousins; special friends, Mrs. Jessie L. Johnson and Mrs. Audrey Monette.

A public visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. Eastern Time until 7:00 P.M. Eastern Time at New Bethel AME Church in Port St. Joe, Florida on Friday, January 31, 2025. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Eastern Time at New Bethel AME Church in Port St. Joe, Florida on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, Florida.
