Buford John Griffin (WWII VETERAN)

July 31, 1925 — November 17, 2024

Port St. Joe, Florida

Buford John Griffin, a cherished father, grandfather, and dedicated WWII veteran, departed peacefully from this life at his residence in Port St. Joe, Florida, at the age of 99 on Sunday, November 17, 2024. He was born on July 31, 1925, in Washington County, Florida.

Buford led a long and industrious career, dedicating over twenty years of his life to working at St. Joe Papermill, where he rose to the role of supervisor before retiring at the age of 55. Known for his hands-on approach, Buford was a true jack of all trades who took great joy in tinkering with lawn mowers and fixing anything that needed repair around the house. His strong work ethic and ability to craft and mend were hallmarks of his personality, traits that marked every aspect of his life.

In 1943, during a time of war, Buford met the love of his life, Ruth Elouise Syfrett. Their courtship blossomed through heartfelt letters while he served in the Army during World War II, with his service taking him to Germany. Upon his discharge in 1946, the couple wed on March 10, 1947, in Dothan, Alabama, and shortly thereafter made Gulf County their home. Together, they celebrated a beautiful life filled with countless memories and family gatherings, achieving a union that lasted for 77 wonderful years until Ruth’s passing.

Buford was a dedicated member of Oak Grove Assembly of God for many years., He loved attending family reunions, going square dancing with Mrs. Ruth, and in his younger days was a member of a bowling league.

Buford is survived by two loving daughters: Wyvonne Griffin Dixon (Steve) and Sylvia Juanise Griffin, both of Port St. Joe, Florida. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: John “JJ” Joseph Hathaway of Panama City, Florida, and Casie Juanise West (Adriane “Layth”) of Port St. Joe, Florida. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his late wife Ruth, his son John Michael Griffin, his parents John and Allie McDaniel Griffin, along with his brothers J.C. and Gene Griffin, and his sisters Shirley Street, Paulette Rogers, Katherine Brock, Lener Griffin, Elvie Scenterfit, and Orena Scenterfit.

Visitation will take place at Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, Florida, on November 21, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Dave Fernandez officiating and military honors. Mr. Griffin will be laid to rest privately at Holly Hill Cemetery.
