Dorothy Gay Knape

July 22, 1939 — June 12, 2023

Dorothy Gay Knape age 83 of Wewahitchka, Florida passed away on Monday, June 12, 2023 at her home. She was born in Fountain, Florida on July 22, 1939 to the late Elizah Gay and Mandie May Carter. Dorothy spent time in Texas and Oklahoma before becoming a resident of Gulf County over twenty-five years ago and was of the Baptist faith. She was the owner and amazing cook at Whitfield Restaurant in Howard Creek for many years and also worked at the newspaper company. In her younger days, Mrs. Dorothy enjoyed horses, gardening, yard work, and traveling. She loved people and could be found a lot of days visiting with friends on the porch over a cup of coffee. Dorothy liked to spend time in the sun on the beach and going to antique shops looking for a bargain on collectibles.

"Mom was the best mom ever, she was our protector and good hearted. A lot of things that happened to her in her life she didn't deserve, so June 12 wasn't really the day she died, it was the first day of her everlasting life and I'll really miss her. I love her."

"My grandma was a truly wonderful person and though things were hard for her she always kept love in her heart and it helped keep her head up. She was the true epitome of what an actual role model is; Someone who keeps their head up and keeps fighting. Thats what she was is a fighter and I am truly grateful for her and the privilege to take care of someone as amazing as she was. Her fight is no longer needed now and she can rest in the abundance she wasnt able to receive on earth. Her kindness rests in Heaven with the Lord now. Ill never forget her and Ill always love her. Rest easy now Ma, I love you with everything."

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawson Whitfield; two daughters, Nellie Ann Whitfield and Brenda Whitfield.

Mrs. Dorothy is survived by one daughter, Linda Dubrule Whitfield of Live Oak, Florida; granddaughter and caregiver, Mandie Whitfield of Wewahitchka, Florida; one sister, Gladys Wilson of Oklahoma, eight grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
