Edward Joe Metcalf, 71, of Overstreet, FL, went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 31, 2024. Ed was born to Jesse James and Frankie Marie (Hicks) Metcalf on June 27, 1953, in San Antonio, TX. While his father served in the military, he and his two brothers Jesse (Marilyn) Metcalf and Jay Metcalf became inseparable, that bond remains to this day. This is also where his love of all things outdoors began.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carolyn Metcalf; children Scott Cawthron, Terri (Mike) Bird, and James (Kim) Metcalf; grandchildren Jamie (Morgan) Bird, Dallas Bird, Kristen Bird, Sarah Metcalf, Zoey Metcalf, Shelby Metcalf, Joseph Metcalf, Haley Metcalf, and Jay Metcalf; numerous great grandchildren, his two brothers, nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and family, and his two dogs (Jodi and Bella Girl).
As a child, the family lived in many places. Some of Ed’s favorite memories took place while stationed in Guam, where he and his brothers spent their free time fishing, camping in the jungle, and playing baseball, at which Ed excelled.
After high school graduation, Ed joined the Air Force where he served from 1972 until 1984. His last station was Tyndall Air Force Base, after which, he made his home in Mexico Beach, FL. He held several jobs until he found his next service opportunity. In 1993 he began his own company, Metcalf Electric & A/C. He was proud to provide a service to the community while providing a way to take care of his friends and family. Although he was retired, he was still involved in the company and would come in asking questions and giving his advice regularly. He absolutely loved being the “Managing Member.”
Being retired allowed him to utilize his time doing other things that he enjoyed, and which meant so much to him. You could usually find him working, hanging out, or relaxing at his shop, the Shell Shack, the Metcalf Camp, on one of the hunting leases, at his hanger at the airport, or the lodge.
He was and is many things to many people. Husband, Dad, Pa, Brother, etc. He held many titles throughout his life, from social, professional, and philanthropist relations. There is no way cover all names/titles he embraced or anyway to cover all the accomplishments of his life. He will be missed but always remembered.
Ed was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Pamela Metcalf, and son Jay Metcalf.
