Herman Joseph Bastek age 90, better known as “Hutt”, passed away at his home in Cottondale, Florida on Saturday, September 28, 2024. He had resided there since 2000 after moving from Blackstone, Virginia where he had spent time ranching and running a business. Hutt was born in New Castle, Delaware on October 8, 1933 to the late Alexander Bastek and Francis Snyder Bastek. At a young age he began working on local farms and fell in love with that way of life. In his spare time, Hutt learned to play guitar and started playing in country bands. He was drafted and served his country proudly in the United States Army and then after leaving the military, he began driving a truck for Sears and Roebuck and worked there until retiring. He, along with his wife, owned Quality Pole Buildings. Throughout his life, Hutt had owned farms in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Florida. He enjoyed horses, being on the tractor, spending time with friends, and telling stories and jokes. Hutt’s greatest joy were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He looked forward to time spent with them and was very proud of their accomplishments.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 55 years, Peggy Jane Bastek; one son, Carl Faron Bastek and three sisters, Stella Bastek, Regina Davis, and Anne Fishbeck.
Hutt is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Jo Pannell of Cottondale, Florida; four grandchildren, Meagan Pannell of Chipley, Florida, Heather Cantler and husband Hugh of Marianna, Florida, Cody Pannell of Malone, Florida and Sarah Whitehead and husband Tater of Port St. Joe, Florida; daughter in law, Christine Bastek of Marianna, Florida; two sisters, Adella Ringler of Bear, Delaware and Theresa Dwyer of Magnolia, Delaware; one brother Carl Bastek of Smyrna, Delaware and four great grandchildren, Jagger, Colt, Evan, and Maisie.
Graveside services will be held at Cottondale First Baptist Church Cemetery on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. Central Time with Pastor Fred Bacher officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M. Central Time at graveside.
