James "Billy" William Cumbie Jr.

August 15, 1940 — June 19, 2023

James William Cumbie Jr., also known as “Billy”, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 19th, 2023. Billy was originally from Apalachicola, Florida where he was born on August 15, 1940, but he has lived in beautiful Port St. Joe most all his life. He worked as a foreman at Basic chemical company for several years. However, Billy was best known in the community as the well-respected “Shrimp Man”. For 40 plus years, he made long-time friends with his customers, from all over North Florida, up through Southern Alabama and as far as Edison, Georgia. He is sure to be sorely missed by them.

Growing up in such a beautiful outdoor community, Billy always had a love for fishing. He made the best hush puppies, to fry along with his catch of the day. When he wasn’t fishing, attending his son’s baseball games was by far his most favorite past time. Seeing his son play brought great joy to Billy’s life.

Over the years, he attended Oak Grove Assembly of God Church. His final church home was First Church of the Nazarene. Billy was a family man and enjoyed going to eat with his friends. His Friday morning breakfast group at Golden Coral was something that he always looked forward to. Many a world problem has been solved sitting behind a piping-hot cup of coffee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James William Cumbie Sr. and Lillie Dalton Cumbie. And one beloved son, James Thomas Cumbie. Billy called him “Buddy”.

Billy is survived by his two children, Donna Carole Williams of Panama City, Florida and James Donovan Cumbie of Port St. Joe, Florida as well as his one sister, Sarah C. Love of Panama City, Florida, and his grandson Jason Glass. He is also survived by his extended family starting with

Tammy Cumbie, Cindy White, James and Linda Cox, and a host of many other special friends.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Eastern time on Monday, June 26th, 2023, at First Church of the Nazarene, 2420 Long Avenue, Port St. Joe, Florida. Interment will immediately follow at Holly Hill Cemetery in Port St. Joe, Florida.

The family will receive friends at the church, beginning at 3:30 Eastern time.
