Joseph “Jobie” Eugene Barfield passed away Sunday, June 2, 2024 at his home after an extended illness. He was born January 21, 1948 in Port St Joe to the late Hozie Ray and Sally Mohea Barfield. He attended Highland View Elementary, Port St Joe High School and Gulf Coast Community Collage after which he entered the Army.
For a period of time Jobie lived in Alabama working as an Air Traffic Controller and building a heavy equipment business. When Jobie returned to Port St Joe he taught auto mechanics at Port St Joe High School before opening Barfield Lawn and Garden in 1990 and went on to start Barfield Bail Bond.
You may know Jobie from the auto mechanics class learning the principle of the combustion engine or perhaps you had a lawn mower worked on or purchased garden seeds from him. In the last few years you may have come to know Jobie as he helped bond a loved one out of jail for you. However you met him, you were one of many who got to know Jobie.
Jobie was a crusader for animals and worked diligently for animals in Gulf County as a charter member of St Joseph Bay Humane Society and often offered his farm to house the large animals that were acquired. He became known from Tallahassee to Panama City as the man to assess the welfare and condition of horses and cows and to work with educating the owners in more effective ways to care for their livestock.
The water was always part of Jobie's life from fishing to scuba diving. He was always planning the next trip and anticipating the catch.
Jobie is survived by his wife, Catherine Barfield, his brother, Marvin Barfield, uncles Peavy Mims and Marvin Hadley, his sons Joey Barfield, Brent Barfield (Alicia), Tony Barfield (Donita) and Elvyn Barfield(Angela), seven grandchildren, Shelby Barfield, Jordan Lee, Tyler Barfield, Gage Barfield, Luke Barfield, Sara Beth Barfield and Rayla Barfield, and three great grandchildren, Zane Moody, Jace Lee and Perri Lee.
A private family service will be held at a later date
Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port Saint Joe, FL.
