Major Dorman R. Reed Jr. Usaf, (Ret.)

December 12, 1942 — July 14, 2024

Major Dorman R. Reed, Jr. USAF, (Ret.) of Port St. Joe FL, formerly of North Little Rock AR, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024. He was born in Toledo OH on December 12, 1942. Dorman graduated from Waite High School in 1960 and the United States Air Force Academy in 1964. He served in the United States Air Force for 25 years before retiring as a Major in 1985 at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas. During his career, Dorman was stationed in Okinawa, Japan from 1966- 1968 and spent most of that time in Southeast Asia flying in South Vietnam and Laos. In 1971 he was stationed at Mather AFB (Sacramento CA) for 4 years as a Flight Instructor and Navigator. Dorman then transferred to Pope AFB in Fayetteville, NC where he was the Chief of Operations in Training for Combat Support Group. From 1978-1981, he served at Ramstein AFB in Germany as Chief of the Underground Headquarters and Airlift Control Center. Dorman’s final assignment was from 1981-1985 as a Navigator in Jacksonville, Arkansas at Little Rock AFB .


As a C-130 Navigator and Flight Instructor, he received numerous awards and citations including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Accommodation Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Residential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device.


In his spare time, Dorman enjoyed cars, flying, racing, music, and reading.


He was preceded in death by his parents Dorman R. Reed, Sr and Helen Reed.


He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Reed of Port St. Joe FL, daughter Pam Niedzwiecki (Doug) of Ladera Ranch CA; grand-dog Chica Reed; grandchildren Sofia and Reed Niedzwiecki; brother Terry Reed (Brenda) of Springfield TN, and sister Sue Cross (Gary) of Toledo OH.


Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., on Monday, July 29, 2024 at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery at North Little Rock with military honors.


In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Dorman’s memory to DAV (Disabled American Veterans) or PVA (Paralyzed Veterans of America).


Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port Saint Joe FL.
