Nellie Jean Stephens

May 21, 1939 — September 24, 2022

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, Nellie Jean Stephens of Wewahitchka, FL, loving wife and mother of five children, and one step-daughter, passed this world to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 83.

Nellie Jean was born on May 21, 1939 in Warren Ohio to Thomas and Gertrude (Snead) Beatty. She grew up in Pennsylvania and was baptized in Christ at Broad Street Baptist Church of Washington, PA, at age 14. On October 15, 1967, she married Albert Monroe Stephens of Wewahitchka, FL; her soul mate for the last 55 years. They raised four sons; Robin, Tommy,

Jimmy and Buel Wade; daughter, Norma Jean, and a long distance mother to her step-daughter Karen.

Nellie Jean lived most of her life in Wewahitchka, FL. She had a passion for arts and crafts, puzzles, holidays, good old-fashion Gospel and County music, and sitting around the talking table with family and friends. She was an avid outdoorswoman and spent many a wet, cold night tent camping with her family at White Oak Landing, the Mud hole, and Chipola River with nary a complaint. Later in life, she loved to camp in their little camper and spent many days and cozy nights on Lake Seminole and St. Joe Bay. She was known for her pure heart, kindness, her pretty blue eyes, warm dimple smile, and her beautiful snowy white hair.

Nellie Jean is preceded in death by her father, Tom, and mother, Gertrude; brothers Jim, and Danny, and her close sister, Katie.

Left to cherish Nellie Jean’s memory are her husband Albert, her sons Robin and wife Renee; Tommy and wife Tracey; Jimmy and his partner Mary Lee, and Buel Wade; her daughter Norma Jean and husband Bobby; her step-daughter Karen; two brothers, Dudley Balmer and Lawrence Beatty; six grandchildren, Misty, Mandy, Jimmy, Sidney, Shane and Shawna; four step-grandchildren, Tim, Tammy, Jake and Hailey; and 18 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral and interment will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. Central Time at Buckhorn Cemetery in Wewahitchka, FL., with Nellie Jean’s brother, Pastor Dudley Balmer officiating. A viewing will be held immediately following the service if you wish to pay last respects.

Friends and family are invited to share their condolences with the family at the Stephens residence at 567 Lake Alice Park Drive, Wewahitchka, FL.

Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, FL.
