Othell "Pop" Hoover

Wewahitchka, Florida

Othell “Pop” Hoover, age 82, peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by his loved ones and was reunited with the love of his life on Friday, February 14th, 2025. Born on March 14, 1942, Othell led a life characterized by a strong work ethic and a deep devotion to his family and friends. 

Renowned for his playful spirit and infectious laughter, Othell excelled in numerous professions throughout his life. He honed his skills as a butcher and a milkman before earning acclaim as one of the finest heavy equipment operators of his era. In his later years, he found immense joy in raising and selling worms, connecting with the local fishing community and delighting in their tales, along with the occasional complimentary catch they shared with him. 

Beyond his professional achievements, Othell was a dedicated family man and steadfast friend. He cherished moments spent with his family, particularly enjoying fishing trips and storytelling sessions. His mornings were often spent at the Creek Stop, savoring a cup of coffee while engaging with new acquaintances. 

Othell is survived by his brother, Buddy Hoover (Debbie); his eight children, Mikel Hoover (Audra), Roy Hoover (Christine), Othell "Odie" Hoover (Shawn), Anthony "Tater" Hoover (Sarah), Tina Messick (Dee), Connie Todd (Craig), Michelle Melvin, and MaryAnn Russell (Joe); along with 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna Hoover; his parents, Earnest and Alma Lee Hoover; his sisters, Opal Barlow, Mary Norris, and Earnestine Hoover; his grandchildren, Kristina “Cricket” Russell, Stephen Messick and great-grandchild Cyla Taylor-O’Bryan. 

A celebration of Othell's life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 11am to 1pm CST at Honeyville Community Center located at 240 Honeyville Park Drive, Wewahitchka, Florida 32465.

Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, Florida.
