Palmer Hays Philyaw Sr., a beloved son, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, in Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by the warmth of his family. Born on May 17, 1963, in Apalachicola, Florida, he was a lifelong proud resident of his cherished hometown. He left this world at the age of 61, leaving behind a legacy of positivity and selflessness that touched the lives of many.

Palmer was a dedicated insurance agent in Apalachicola, making significant contributions to his community through his work and involvement. He was not only successful in his career but also exemplified the spirit of service as a longtime member of the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department, where he embodied the values of courage and compassion.

His academic journey began at Apalachicola High School, from which he graduated before earning a Bachelor's Degree from Florida State University. Palmer's love for his community was evident in everything he did, including the time he spent at the dock by the water’s edge, a place where he found solace and joy. He cherished visiting and conversing with friends around town, creating connections and building memories that would last a lifetime.

He was a man of faith, dedicated to the Lord and actively involved in the Methodist Church in Apalachicola. His spiritual beliefs guided him in life, and the photographs and scriptures he shared on social media served as a beacon of hope and encouragement for those around him. Over the years, he faced health challenges with remarkable grace and dignity, demonstrating an unwavering strength that inspired many.

Palmer's family will forever remember him as a loving son to his mother, Patsy Philyaw of Apalachicola, and as a proud father to his son, Palmer "Hays" Philyaw Jr. and his wife Chelsea of Orlando, Florida. He is also survived by his brother, Edward Philyaw and his wife Alyce of Tallahassee, Florida, and his two nephews, Samuel and Nathan Philyaw, both of Tallahassee.

Though he is preceded in death by his father, James "Jim" Philyaw, Palmer’s spirit will continue to shine brightly through the hearts of all who knew him. He was not just a man of the community but a guiding light for others, and his memory will forever be cherished. As we remember Palmer, let us celebrate his life and the indelible marks he left on each of us. His legacy of kindness, compassion, and unwavering faith will live on, shining the way for future generations to follow.

A Celebration of Life Service/Toast to Palmer will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 12pm-2pm  Eastern Time at the Apalachicola Yacht Club.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Apalachicola on Sunday, March 23, 2025 beginning at 2pm Eastern Time.
