Phyllis J. Gortman age 81 of Wewahitchka, Florida passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2025 in a local hospital after an extended illness. She was born on September 11, 1943 in Florala, Alabama to the late Clinton L. Wilkins and Agnes Player Wilkins. Phyllis grew up in Laurel Hill, Florida and moved to Shalimar, Florida in 1959. She worked for a short period of time with Chemstrand Corporation in Pensacola, Florida prior to moving to Port St. Joe, Florida in the early 1960's. Phyllis moved to Wewahitchka, Florida in 1975 and worked for the Gulf County School System driving a school bus and working in the school office until her retirement.
Phyllis loved her family and cherished all the friends she made down through the years. In her earlier years you could find her on one of the rivers fishing or in the gulf scalloping. She loved sports and missed very few baseball and football games. Phyllis loved to cook and was a great cook. She was very generous in sharing the food she cooked with family and friends. Phyllis's memory will live on through her family and friends
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Thomas E. Wood Jr. and one nephew, James W. Carte.
Phyllis is survived by two sons, Christopher M. Wood and Russell A. Wood, and a daughter in law, Gloria Wood, all of Wewahitchka, Florida; eight grandchildren, Lacey Wood, Buddy Wood (Breanna), Harley Redd, Shelby Wood, Kayla Brown (Justin), Chipper Wood (Mya), and Gemma Rae Wood; four great grandchildren, Brodie Adkison, Avery Adkison, Hinson Brown, and Blair Wood and one sister, Carolyn A. Carte of Shalimar, Florida.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. Central Time at Roberts Cemetery in Wewahitchka, Florida with Pastor Joey Smith officiating.
The family of Mrs. Gortman will be gathered at the home of Gloria Wood (3074 Hwy 71 South, Wewahitchka, Florida 32465) for anyone who would like to visit.
Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, Florida.
