Samuel William Berkheiser Jr., a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 76 on Monday, March 24, 2025, in Apalachicola, Florida. Born on January 17, 1949, in Washington, D.C., Samuel lived a life enriched by his passion for geology, for passion for geology, nature, and his family.
Samuel was an exploratory geologist who worked in the private industry in Colorado. When General Ford was president, ARCO (Atlantic Richfield company) hired Samuel to locate oil deposits in oil shale on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains. After moving East with Barbara and a young Megan, he worked in Saudi Arabia to find minerals for a proposed cement factory necessary to build roads throughout the region. After returning to the states his son was born 2 weeks later. The state geological department of Pennsylvania hired Sam as the assistant state geologist, where he continued to work as an industrial mineral geologist until he retired in 2007. Sam authored many geological texts and publications throughout his career. His profound knowledge and commitment to his field were evident throughout his years of service. Following his retirement, he made the move to Franklin County, Florida, where he enjoyed his well-deserved leisure time.
An individual of many talents and a warm personality, Samuel held a master's degree in science, which complemented his professional endeavors. He was known for his loving and happy disposition, making lasting impressions on those he met. Samuel had a zest for life that spanned a variety of interests; he was not only an avid white water kayaker and martial arts enthusiast but also a skilled Bonsai artist. His love for gardening, mountain biking, boating, canoeing and swimming reflected his deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors.
Samuel's faith as a Presbyterian was a guiding force in his life, offering him strength and comfort throughout his journey. He cherished his family deeply and was a pillar of support and love for them. Left to carry on Samuel's legacy are his devoted wife of fifty-three years, Barbara Berkheiser, who resides in Apalachicola, Florida, and his children, son Samuel William Berkheiser III (Elizabeth D. L. Berkheiser) of Apalachicola and daughter Megan E. Berkheiser (Michael Caldwell) of Savannah, Georgia. He was a proud grandfather to his two grandchildren, Samuel William Berkheiser IV and Tristan E. Caldwell, who brought him immense joy.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel W. Berkheiser M.D. and Harriet A. Hoover Berkheiser, who laid the foundation for the man he became.
A graveside service will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola, Florida, on April 5, 2025, beginning at 2:00 PM. Samuel William Berkheiser Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, knowledge, and joy that will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege to know him.
