Stephen Irwin "Richard" Smith

Stephen Irwin Richard Smith, better known as “Richard” to his family and friends passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at the age of 74. He was born on January 1, 1950 and was a lifelong resident of Apalachicola, Florida. Richard was a faithful follower of Jesus; serving as a Deacon for twenty-five years at United Baptist Church in Eastpoint and had most recently been a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Apalachicola. Richard worked eight years as a heavy equipment operator for Gadsden County and fifteen years around Franklin County. He also drove semi trucks for St. Joe Container Company for twenty years and finished his career with seven years in maintenance with Franklin County Schools. Richard enjoyed wood working, tinkering with mechanics, and hunting in his younger years.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Bernard Smith and Loney Ward Smith; two brothers, David “DK” Smith and Harry “Chief” Smith and five sisters, Marvis Henderson, Naomi Hatcher, Lois Cooper, Alice Parramore, and Sherry Ann Smith.


Richard is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Morna Knight Smith; three children, Susette Davis and husband Johnny, Richard Smith and wife Sissy, and Lloyd Smith and wife Jill; two sisters, Abigail Nowling and Carey Howard and husband Danny; two grandchildren, Stephen Smith and Emily Smith; three lifelong friends, Johnny Allen, Rachial Hendels, and Elaine Williams.


Funeral services will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church of Apalachicola on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Eastern Time with Pastor Mac McMillan and Pastor Bobby Shiver officiating. Interment will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola, Florida. A time of visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time at the church.

Arrangements are entrusted to the caring staff of Comforter Funeral Home in Port St. Joe, Florida.
